How We Test

Our promise is simple: if a claim affects your ability to lift quietly and efficiently in a small space, we test it—and we show our work. Every product goes through the same core protocol so comparisons are fair and repeatable.

Scope and Setup

  • Environments: concrete slab, wood-over-joists (upstairs), and carpet over pad. We test bare and with common mats/platforms.
  • Trials: at least three passes per test, publishing averages and ranges; any anomalies are noted.
  • Units: measurements reported in A-weighted decibels (dBA), seconds, pounds, inches, and cost-per-pound. We log temperatures and notes that could affect results.

Noise and Vibration

  • Decibels: we measure at 1 meter and 3 meters during controlled events—rack/derack, changeover, and gentle set-down—capturing both peak and Leq (average) values.
  • Floor transmission: we log vibration proxies on wood-over-joists and carpet using a weighted sensor on the floor near the cradle and beneath the lifting zone, noting relative changes with mats and platforms.
  • Handling scenarios: we do not drop weights. We simulate careful home use—smooth set-downs from knee height—because quiet training depends on technique and equipment working together.

Changeover Speed and Ease

  • Timed swaps: we time weight changes across common rep schemes (e.g., 25→45→25 lb) and ladder patterns. Each run includes cradle re-seating.
  • One-hand viability: we note true one-hand changes, required hand-offs, and any fiddly steps.
  • Error risk: we track mis-seats, missed plates, or lock failures during realistic pace—not rushed, not staged.

Ergonomics and Safety

  • Handle fit: we measure diameter, usable length, and knurl/grip texture; we score comfort for small and average hands.
  • Geometry: overall bell length at light and heavy settings; balance under pressing and rowing patterns.
  • Safety checks: exposed pinch points, lock visibility, cradle stability, and stand tipping risk; we flag child- and pet-safety considerations.

Footprint, Storage, and Build

  • Dimensions: cradle footprint, height, and minimum clearance for safe changeovers; stand compatibility.
  • Rattle and lock-up: subjective feel corroborated by recorded rattling events during controlled moves.
  • Durability signals: material and mechanism inspection, parts availability, warranty terms, and track record if applicable.

Scoring and Weights

  • Default weighting: Noise & Vibration 30%, Changeover Speed 25%, Ergonomics 20%, Footprint 15%, Value/Durability 10%.
  • Use-case variants: we publish recommended re-weights (e.g., speed-first for metabolic circuits; top-end-first for strength progression).
  • Transparency: category scores link to raw notes and timing logs when available.

Quality Controls

  • Repeatability: minimum three trials per test; outliers investigated and reported.
  • Calibration: meters validated against a reference tone before sessions; mats allowed a 24-hour lay-flat to normalize.
  • Updates: we re-test after firmware/mechanism revisions, major price changes, or when long-term wear reveals new behavior.

Limits and Ethics

  • Real homes vary. We share methods so you can simulate our results in your space.
  • Samples: whether purchased or provided, every product goes through the same protocol. Loaners receive the same treatment and disclosures.
  • Safety first: we never recommend behavior that risks neighbors, floors, or people. Technique matters; we include quiet-use tips where relevant.
